There are some time-honoured wedding traditions in the UK. Think of ‘something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue’, which was first documented in 1883. Another which is often adhered to is the bride and groom not seeing each other on the morning of the wedding.

Some Weird Wedding Customs

1) In Sweden it is customary to seek a sneaky kiss with the bride or groom whenever the bride is out of the room. Nowadays the bride is also allowed to try for some sneaky kisses with her guests.

2) One of the traditions which may particularly surprise UK brides comes from Mauritania: it is the done thing for brides-to-be to be sent to fat camps to put on weight. Plumper brides make the man appear to be wealthier.

3) In India bridesmaids steal the groom’s shoes and demand a ransom payment before giving them back.

4) Back in the UK, Scottish brides may be put to the test to see how tough they are. Friends and family throw rubbish, rotten fish, fruit and vegetables at her some days before the wedding. 5) In Korea grooms are tested by having their feet whipped with rope or dead fish for an hour.

8) Finally, in Germany couples are made to saw huge logs in half. In addition, after they have tied the knot, wedding guests smash a large amount of crockery, which the happy couple must tidy up.
